The Winthrop Eagles defeated William & Mary in a 4-3 thriller that included three three-set matches and two tiebreakers Saturday afternoon in the first round of the ITA Kick-Off Classic played at Linder Stadium at Ring Tennis Complex.
The Tribe began the day on a positive note, earning the doubles points with wins from Hope Johnson and Anik Cepeda and Nina Vulovich and Marlen Mesgarzadeh at No. 1 and 2 doubles, respectively.
In singles play, Winthrop's Elizaveta Zaytesva and Yasmine Alkema gave Winthrop the lead by winning two singles points. William & Mary's Marivick Mamiit then won at the No. 6 spot to even the score to 2-2.
After victories by William & Mary's Marlen Mesgarzadeh and Winthrop's Andressa Garcia, both in three sets, the teams were tied at 3-3.
Winthrop's Anik Cepeda clinched the win for the Eagles with a thrilling 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 victory over William & Mary's Giovanna Portiolli.
Winthrop will face Florida in the Championship Sunday at 1 p.m. while William & Mary will play College of Charleston in the consolation round at 10 a.m.
