Gator Gymnasts Help Turn 34th Street Wall Pink for Upcoming Making Strides Against Breast Cancer

Those driving by Gainesville's 34th Street Wall will notice a large portion is now pink, thanks to the work Saturday morning by the Gator gymnastics team and about 25 other members of the Gainesville community. The new hue is a billboard to remind viewers that the American Cancer Society's Annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk is coming up later this month.
“I think it looks amazing,” Florida Head Coach Rhonda Faehn said after she put her paint roller down. “It was really wonderful to see everyone come together and have so much fun doing something for such an unbelievable cause. We brightened up the wall and hopefully will raise awareness for the walk which will happen on Saturday, Oct. 22. We want everyone to come out and support this great community of Gainesville.”
Senior Amy Ferguson showed her abilities writing with spray paint, adding slogans and walk information on the pink base put in place by teammates.
“I guess I have good handwriting so I've been told,” she said with a laugh. “I did a lot of writing and a lot of people helped out with the symbols and painting. It looks pretty good.”
The next Gators Link to Pink, the team's annual breast cancer awareness meet, is versus LSU on Feb. 10, 2012. The popularity of the meet has grown over the years and Ferguson says the team's early morning workout with a paint roller is just a way of saying thanks.
“We love to show our support for the community, especially with such a great cause,” Ferguson said. “They support us with our Link to Pink meet so we just wanted show them some appreciation back.”
