Gator swimmer Matt Elliott (Peoria, Ill.) was named the SEC Male Freshman Athlete of the week for the third time this year, the league announced Wednesday. Elliott received the nod after his performance at the Georgia Tech Invitational this past weekend in Atlanta, Ga.
The Peoria, Ill., native helped lead the Gators to a second-place finish with two individual victories on the weekend as he claimed the 100 and 200 breast in 55.66 and 1:59.85, respectively.
Elliott was one of only five male swimmers at the Georgia Tech Invitational to win two or more events. Out of that select group, he was the lone freshman to accomplish the feat.
The Gators wrapped up the fall competition schedule in Atlanta, Ga., and will rest from dual competition until the start of the New Year. Select Florida swimmers will be on hand at the USA Swimming National meet December 1-3 in Atlanta, Ga., hosted at Georgia Tech, while both diving squads will head to Athens, Ga., Dec 2-4 for the Georgia Diving Invitational. Fans are also encouraged to follow the swimming and diving program on Twitteror Facebook for live updates, photos and video from the event.
