Joanna Mather Falls in Singles Final of USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships

Florida senior Joanna Mather (Duluth, Ga.) reached the final of the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships but fell short of capturing the individual singles title as she dropped a 7-5, 6-1 decision to SMU's 10th-ranked Marta Lesniak at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center on Sunday.
“Jo played well but her opponent was on top of her game today and throughout this tournament,” UF coach Roland Thornqvist said. “She has no regrets about her play today or the way she played this weekend. I'm so proud of how she represented herself and our program. She competed hard, physically and mentally and earned her spot in the finals.”
The USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships is the second leg of the collegiate grand slam.
In Tampa, Alex Cercone (Seminole, Fla.) and Sofie Oyen (Leopoldsburg, Belgium) capped their respective play at the USF Fall Tennis Classic with perfect 3-0 singles record, while Olivia Janowicz (Palm Bay, Fla.) added a win on Sunday. The doubles teams of Cercone and Oyen, and Janowicz and Caroline Hitimana (Waterloo, Belgium) tallied victories in the non-draw tournament.
Facing players from UCF, Cercone defeated Courtney Griffith, 6-0, 6-3, Oyen downed Lorgbergs, 6-3, 6-2, and Janowicz topped Jenny Doerfler, 6-3, 6-1.
In doubles, Cercone and Oyen beat USF's Alonso and Vasenina, 8-6, while the other Gator team defeated Fracassi and Mills, 8-1.
This weekend marked the final competition of the fall season for the Gators, who next return to action in January at the Freeman Memorial individual tournament held in Las Vegas, Jan. 13-15. Florida launches its 2011-12 dual match schedule on January 25 playing host to Troy at Linder Stadium at Ring Tennis Complex at 3 p.m.
