Monday, December 26, 2011 | Women's Basketball
The University of Florida's Jennifer George (Orlando, Fla.) was named the Southeastern Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
George was the catalyst in Florida (9-3) winning its own Gator Holiday Classic, as she totaled 34 points and 23 rebounds en route to earning MVP honors.
This is the second time this season and in her career George has been selected to an all-tournament team; it is the first time she has been voted MVP. This also is the first time George has been honored with the SEC's weekly award.
George posted a double-double in both tournament wins, extending her double-double streak to four games, the first time a Gator has strung together as many since Vanessa Hayden did so midway thru the 2003-04 season.
George shot an incredible 72.2 percent from the floor during UF's two games during the week, hitting 13-of-18.
George also blocked five shots during the tournament and increased her career total to 98, two shy of becoming the eighth Gator to block at least 100 shots.
In the championship game she pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds – one shy of her career-high – and helped snap Duquesne's program-record eight-game winning streak
George and the Gators return to action on Wednesday, when they play host to Samford (6-5) in their final non-conference game of the season. Tip-off from the O'Connell Center is scheduled for 7 p.m. The game is $1 Day, with all general admission tickets available for $1, while fans can enjoy one dollar small soda, popcorn and hotdogs.
