A pair of Florida freshmen, offensive tackle Chaz Green (Tampa, Fla.) and safety De'Ante “Pop” Saunders (DeLand, Fla.) have been named Freshman All-SEC performers, the Conference announced today.
Green started eight games on the season at tackle for the Orange and Blue and helped the Gators rush for 1,284 yards and 12 touchdowns in those contests. Additionally, when Green lined-up for UF the Gators passed for 1,376 yards and seven touchdowns.
Saunders saw action in 11 games, making nine starts as a true freshman. Saunders finished his debut season with 22 tackles, two interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown against Furman, and a forced fumble.
Green, Saunders and the rest of the Gators return to action when they face Big Ten foe Ohio State in the TaxSlayer.com Gator Bowl on Jan. 2, 2012, at EverBank Field in Jacksonville, Fla. The game will be broadcast on ESPN2 at 1 p.m. The Gators will be making their 21st-straight bowl appearance, which ranks first in the SEC and second nationally. This will also be Florida's 18th January Bowl game since 1993, the highest total in the country.
