Caleb Sturgis Named Walter Camp All-American
Friday, December 9, 2011 | Football
University of Florida kicker Caleb Sturgis has been named to the 2011 Walter Camp All-American second team announced Thursday night at The Home Depot College Football Awards Show. Sturgis is the second Gator specialist in as many years to be named a Walter Camp All-American as punter Chas Henry took home first team honors last year.
In addition to being tabbed a Walter Camp All-American, Sturgis was one of three finalists for the Groza Award.
Sturgis, a junior from St. Augustine, Fla., ranks third in the nation with 1.9 field goals made per game. He has converted 21 of 25 field goal attempts this season and has made all 28 extra point attempts. Sturgis has made multiple field goals in eight of 11 games he has played this season.
Before missing a 52-yard attempt against Alabama, Sturgis had made 14-straight field goals dating back to the 2010 season, a streak that was the third-longest in school history. His 55-yard field goal against Furman gives him three field goals from 50-or-more yards on the season, tied for the second-most in the nation. Sturgis holds the Florida record with five made field goals of 50-or-more yards.
In his career, Sturgis has made 45 of 59 field goal attempts (76.3 percent) and 93 of 97 extra points. He has accounted for 228 points as a Gator, ranking fourth all-time in Florida history.
In addition to his on-field accomplishments, Sturgis has spent many hours volunteering in the community, hosting tours of Ben Hill Griffin Stadium for military veterans and children in the Gainesville community, spending time with underprivileged children, visiting hospitals, tutoring elementary students and collecting food for underprivileged community members.
