UF Swimming & Diving Earns School-Record Six SEC Yearly Awards, 19 All-SEC Selections and 56 Overall Honors

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - The University of Florida swimming and diving team earned a school-record six Southeastern Conference yearly awards, 19 total All-SEC selections and 56 overall honors, the league announced Friday. The recognition comes after UF men's and women's teams swam to second-place finishes at the 2011 SEC Swimming and Diving Championships Feb. 11-19. The event was hosted by the Orange and Blue at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center for the first time since 2005, and the Gators took home more individual SEC titles (13) and set more SEC records (seven) than any other conference school.
Voted on by the league's head coaches, several Gators won SEC hardware for their efforts at the meet. Senior Conor Dwyer (Winnetka, Ill.) took home SEC Male Swimmer of the Year, and shared with Auburn's Dan Mazzaferro the men's Commissioner's Trophy for the High Point Award for the most individual points scored at the meet. Dwyer is the only swimmer in SEC history to be named SEC Male Swimmer of the Year and win the Commissioner's Trophy in consecutive years. Freshmen Elizabeth Beisel (North Kingstown, R.I.) and Marcin Cieslak (Warsaw, Poland) (men) became the first pair of Gators to ever bring home both SEC Freshman of the Year Awards, with Beisel becoming the first Gator female since Caroline Burckle in 2005 to win the award, and Cieslak becoming the first Gator male since Bradley Ally in 2006 to be honored in the men's side. In diving, senior Monica Dodson (Franklin, Ind.) picked up her first career SEC Female Diver of the Year Award, while head diving coach Donnie Craine was named SEC Women's Diving Coach of the Year for the third time.
On the women's side, Beisel and Dodson joined junior and 2011 SEC 200 fly champion Teresa Crippen (Conshohocken, Pa.) on the First Team, while juniors Sarah Bateman (Orlando, Fla.) and Shara Stafford (Topeka, Kan.) paired with sophomore Jamie Bohunicky (Gainesville, Fla.) on the Second Team. On the women's All-SEC Freshman Team, Hilda Luthersdottir (Hafnarfjordur, Iceland) made the team in the 100 breast, Alana Pazevic (Mill Creek, Wash.) was selected in the 100 back and Trish Regan (Carmel, Ind.) was chosen in the 200 back. Beisel was also chosen to the squad in the 200 back, 500 free and 400 IM.
Making the men's First Team along with Dwyer and Cieslak included seniors Brett Fraser (George Town, Cayman Islands) and Balazs Gercsak (Budapest, Hungary), redshirt sophomore Marco Loughran (London, England) and sophomore Sebastien Rousseau (Cape Town, South Africa). Sophomore Scott Sommer (Ocala, Fla.) joined freshmen Brad deBorde (Longwood, Fla.) and Connor Signorin (East Windsor, N.J.) on the Second Team, while Cieslak, deBorde and Signorin united with fellow freshman Eric Solis (Holland, Mich.) on the men's All-SEC Freshman Team. The Gators placed a SEC-best eight freshmen swimmers on the men's and women's All-SEC Freshman Team.
In addition to its SEC titles and records, UF set eight O'Connell Center pool records, shattered nine school records and swam 22 NCAA Automatic Qualifying Marks. The 13 individual SEC titles are the second-most by the Gators (14 in 2005) under the direction and leadership of head coach Gregg Troy since he came to Florida in 1998.
On top of UF's accomplishments, the O'Connell Center pool cemented itself as the fastest pool in the country. At the week-long meet, one U.S. Open short-course record was broken, one American short-course record was broken, one NCAA record was shattered, 19 SEC records were broken and 31 new O'Connell Center pool records were established.
