Thursday, March 10, 2011 | Men's Golf
Florida Men's Golf will tee off at 11 a.m. ET Friday at the Bandon Dunes Championship in Bandon, Ore. The Gators have a full team after playing without redshirt senior Andres Echavarria (Medellin, Colombia) and Tommy Mou (Bradenton, Fla.) and finishing in a tie for sixth place at the John Hayt Invitational on March 1.
The Gators are making their first appearance in Florida history at the Bandon Dunes Championship, which features 16 teams from across the country: British Columbia, Boise State, Colorado, Florida, Gonzaga, Loyola Marymount, Mercer, Northern Colorado, Oregon, Oregon State, Saint Mary's, San Jose State, South Carolina, Utah Valley, Vanderbilt and Washington. Of the 16 schools, two are featured in the GolfWorld/Nike Golf Coaches' Poll Top 25: Florida (4) and Washington (23).
Florida has only met Mercer (finished eighth at the JU Invitational and 11th at the John Hayt Invitational) and Vanderbilt (14th at the Isleworth Invitational) so far this season.
Sophomore Phillip Choi (Orlando, Fla.) is coming off his first-career medalist honor after winning the John Hayt Invitational and tying his career-best score of 209.
Senior and Ben Hogan Watch List candidate Bank Vongvanij (Bradenton, Fla.) is coming off his highest score of the season with a tie for 15th place at the John Hayt Invitational after finishing in the top five in the first five tournaments of the 2010-11 season.
Echavarria, Mou and sophomore Tyler McCumber (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) will also suit up for the Gators.
The two-day tournament will feature 36 holes on Friday and 18 holes on Saturday. Tee times are set at 11 a.m. ET both days. Check www.GatorZone.com for updated news and results and Golfstat.com for live scoring.
