Gator Coaches Featured in Wednesday's GatorZone
Wednesday, March 16, 2011 | Lacrosse
Wednesday's GatorZone television show will feature two segments on the No. 10 Florida lacrosse team.
The show will profile assistant coaches Erica LaGrow and Caitlyn McFadden. These National Team members and 2009 World Cup champions know what it takes to win. They have been using their ability to mimic opposing offenses to the Gators' advantage, as Florida is currently 7-1 on the season. They also speak with junior Caroline Cochran (Annapolis, Md.) about the advantages of having role models such as LaGrow and McFadden, both on and off the field.
LaGrow was a four-year starter at North Carolina, being named First Team All-ACC and an All-South Regional All-American as a senior. She ended her collegiate career with 80 goals and 15 assists for 95 points. She also picked up 90 ground balls and controlled 84 draws. The Skaneateles, N.Y., native helped the Tar Heels to the NCAA Championship Quarterfinals four consecutive years. LaGrow scored four goals in four games during the group stage of the 2009 FIL Women's World Cup and helped the team to a perfect 4-0 record. She then went on to win the gold medal with McFadden, as the U.S. defeated Australia, 8-7, in the gold medal game.
McFadden is the reigning Tewaaraton Award winner and Honda Award winner, the ACC Player of the Year and ACC Tournament MVP, IWLCA National Midfielder of the Year and a two-time IWLCA First-Team All-American. The Phoenix, Md. native finished her career with 149 goals and 110 assists for 259 total points. McFadden left the Terrapins as the sixth-leading scorer in program history, having started every game of her collegiate career. The Maryland Terrapins won the 2010 National Championship and McFadden was named the NCAA Tournament MVP.
Viewers will also be able to catch up with Florida head coach Amanda O'Leary as she discusses the team's recent success with Larry Vettel. The Gator team has defeated seven-straight opponents and is ranked in the top-10 for the first time in program history. They are not only the fastest team to ever reach the IWLCA top-10 in the history of the poll, but also the fastest Gator team to achieve a top-10 ranking in the known history of Florida athletics.
GatorZone airs Wednesday, March 16 on Sun Sports (Gainesville/Ocala Cox Cable channel 48 or 748) at 5:30 p.m. The show replays on Thursday, March 17 at 12:30 p.m. Gator fans can also see the segments on www.GatorZone.com later in the week.
