Women's Tennis Remains No. 1 in National Rankings
Tuesday, March 8, 2011 | Women's Tennis
For the second consecutive week, the University of Florida women's tennis team sits atop the Women's National Team Rankings, administered by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) and released on Tuesday.
Florida's jump from No. 2 to the No. 1 ranking last week was the result of the switch the Campbell/ITA Rankings makes at this point in the year from a human vote to a computer point-per-match formula.
According to the ITA, Florida's strength of schedule helped it leap over then-top-ranked Stanford, which defeated the Gators, 4-2, on Feb. 21 in the final of the ITA National Team Indoor Championships. The ITA states that, “UF has posted five top-12 victories, all over ACC opponents, including three wins over top-5 competition. Stanford meanwhile has picked up more top 20 wins than Florida with six but only has two wins over teams ranked in the top 12.”
The March 1 listing was the first time Florida has been the top-ranked team since March 6, 2007.
The women's tennis team is one of four top-ranked Gator programs this week, joining the Florida baseball, gymnastics and men's indoor track squads as the other No. 1-ranked teams on campus.
Florida (13-1, 2-0 SEC) returns to court and plays host to No. 33 Alabama on Friday at Linder Stadium at Ring Tennis Complex, where first-serve is scheduled for 5 p.m. and admission is free.
The Gators have won 96 consecutive regular-season home matches, as well as 87 overall at home, entering Friday's contest against the Crimson Tide. Florida also sports an impressive 166-1 all-time home record against Southeastern Conference foes.
