GAINESVILLE, Fla. – University of Florida associate head swimming coach Anthony Nesty has been selected as an assistant coach for Team USA for the 2011 World University Games, USA Swimming announced. The Games, taking place in Shenzhen, China, from Aug. 12-23, will mark Nesty's first time on staff for a U.S. international squad.
“I am extremely grateful and humbled to represent the United States in a coaching capacity at this year's World University Games,” Nesty said. “This is my first time on staff with the U.S., so it's a wonderful opportunity and a great honor for me to work side-by-side with the best athletes in the world.”
A 13-year veteran of the Florida coaching staff, Nesty is no stranger to the international swimming scene. Nesty served as an assistant coach for the Cayman Islands National Team in 2009, where he coached former UF swimmers Shaune and Brett Fraser (George Town, Cayman Islands), helping them break the school record in the 50, 100 and 200-meter freestyle. In 2008, Nesty was the head coach for the Suriname National Team at the Beijing Olympics, where he celebrated the 20th anniversary of his Olympic gold medal as his country's flag bearer. Four years earlier at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, the Suriname native was an assistant coach on the same team.
“It's a tremendous opportunity for Anthony and it's well deserved,” head coach Gregg Troy said. “To have him coaching on the international scene on the U.S. staff is just a remarkable honor. I'm extremely proud of him.”
This past season, Nesty helped coach Brett Fraser to his first national championship in the 200-yard freestyle at the 2011 NCAA Championships. Fraser's title marked the third consecutive year an athlete under Nesty's direction captured the 200 free title. Nesty also had a hand in coaching the NCAA title-winning 800-yard freestyle relay squad.
Behind his tutelage in 2010-11, the Florida men captured two national championships, 19 All-American honors, eight SEC Championships and 39 All-SEC honors. Additionally, Nesty coached the Orange and Blue to four school records on the men's side this past season, while also helping Conor Dwyer (Winnetka, Ill.) and Marcin Cieslak (Warsaw, Poland) earn SEC Male Swimmer of the Year and SEC Male Freshman Swimmer of the Year honors, respectively.
Also being named to the U.S. men's squad was former Gator Rex Tullius (Port Orange, Fla.), who competed in Gainesville from 2005-09. Tullius, who will compete at the Games in the 100 and 200 back, was a five-time All-American in his tenure at Florida.
