BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – University of Florida sophomore golfer Mia Piccio (Bacolod City, Philippines) was recognized by the Southeastern Conference Friday, earning Second Team All-SEC honors for her performance during the 2010-11 season. Piccio's selection marks the 10th consecutive year that Florida has been represented on the SEC's First or Second Team.
Piccio leads the team, sporting a 73.89 stroke average and has competed in all 10 of Florida's tournaments this season, tallying two top-10 finishes and five other top-25 finishes and has been the Gators' top finisher on five separate occasions. She placed in the top 16 in each of the Gators' five spring tournaments and has reached a career-high individual ranking of 51st nationally in the Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings. 89.7 percent of her rounds have counted toward Florida's team score and she leads the team with 70 birdies. The Philippines native recently had a streak of 10 consecutive rounds without posting anything worse than a bogey and has been at the front of the lineup for the Orange and Blue four times. Her strong short game has helped the Gators rank ninth in the country as a team in putts after hitting the green in regulation (1.896).
The Gator sophomore set her career-low for a single round, firing a 69 in the third round of the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic and matched it two weeks later in the final round of the SEC Championship. Additionally, she has recorded 10 even or under par rounds along with two even or under par tournaments and helped lead Florida to the SunTrust Gator Women's Golf Invitational crown on its home course, tying for seventh after carding a 217 (+7).
Piccio also competed internationally twice in the fall. She first represented her country at the 2010 World Amateur Golf Team Championships in Buenos Aires, Argentina from Oct. 20-23 and was a part of the trio that led the Philippines to an eighth-place finish – the best-ever for the nation in that competition. From Nov. 17-20, Piccio participated in the 16th Asian Games, located in Guangzhou, China. She completed the four-round event in 18th individually, as the Philippines concluded the tournament in sixth.
No. 20 Florida will head to Daytona Beach, Fla. to compete in the NCAA East Regional from May 5-7. The Gators are attempting to advance to the NCAA Championships for the first time since 2008 and the 21st time in school history. The top eight teams in the 24-team field and two individuals not on those eight teams will progress.
