BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Florida sophomore Mia Piccio (Bacolod City, Philippines) was selected to the 2011 SEC Golf Community Service Team, the league announced on Monday. The Community Service Team consists of one student-athlete from each SEC institution, nominated by school personnel, who has devoted herself to community service.
Piccio assisted with children and attended to other staff delegated tasks at Baby Gator Child Development and Research Center – an on-campus childcare facility with curriculum designed to address the needs of children and foster growth in social, behavioral, cognitive, physical and early literacy skills. Additionally, the recently-named 2011 Second Team All-SEC honoree has visited Shands Hospital at the University of Florida on multiple occasions to spend time with children, helping them with arts and crafts projects and distributing team memorabilia to lift the spirits of the patients she encountered and also helped paint a Fit for Life Fitness Center.
Piccio and the rest of the No. 20 University of Florida women's golf team will travel to Daytona Beach, Fla. for the NCAA East Regional from May 5-7. The top eight teams and two individuals not on those teams in the 24-squad field, will advance to the NCAA Championships from May 17-20.
