Both Florida teams enter this weekend's meet ranked among the nation's top-20, according to the latest Division I computer rankings by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. The Gator men are currently ranked No. 2 nationally, while the UF women check in at No. 19 this week.
Florida has qualified 27 slots on the men's side and 22 slots on the women's side for this weekend's meet. The Gators feature athletes who claimed seven Southeastern Conference titles two weeks ago, including: Will Claye (men's long jump, men's triple jump), Gray Horn (men's decathlon), Genevieve LaCaze (women's steeplechase), Fawn Miller (women's javelin), Terrell Wilks (men's 100-meter dash) and the men's 4x100-meter relay.
Junior jumper Will Claye (Phoenix, Ariz.) was named the SEC Men's Field Athlete of the Year on Tuesday and he leads the Gators into their NCAA quest. Claye won both the men's long jump and the men's triple jump at the 2011 SEC Outdoor Championships. He ranks No. 2 in the world in the men's long jump and has the second-best wind-aided time in the world in the men's triple jump this season.
Claye joins teammates Omar Craddock (Killeen, Texas ) and Christian Taylor (Fayetteville, Ga.) to pack a powerful punch in the men's triple jump. That corps went 1-2-5 at the NCAA Indoor Championships in the men's to give a dynamic jumpstart to Florida winning its second consecutive NCAA indoor crown. Claye and Taylor are currently ranked 1-2 in the nation in the men's triple jump, while Craddock is ranked sixth. Claye (2nd) and Taylor (9th) also are both ranked in the top-10 nationally in the men's long jump.
Junior sprinter Jeff Demps (Winter Garden, Fla.) is the defending NCAA Champion in the men's 100-meter dash and was also a part of Florida's 2010 NCAA Champion 4x100-meter relay team. Demps holds a career-best time of 9.96 (+2.4) w, which matches his NCAA-winning time from a year ago.
The Florida men's 4x100-meter relay team currently leads the nation with a time of 38.53, which goes down as the second-fastest time in program history. The quartet consists of freshman Eddie Lovett (West Palm Beach, Fla.), Taylor, senior Terrell Wilks (New Haven, Conn.) and Demps.
Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex at E.C. Billy Hayes Track is the site of this year's NCAA East Preliminary Rounds. The facility played host to the 1997 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships and has hosted five Big Ten Championships (1966, 1970, 1977, 2001 and 2010). The track, located within the outdoor complex, is named after fabled coaching legend Earl C. “Billy” Hayes. He coached seven Indiana athletes to U.S. Olympic teams during his career.
The facility has 3,200 permanent seats, with the temporary additions nearly doubling capacity. Hayes Track features a 400-meter nine-lane Polytan surface track with a 110-foot radius on curves to encourage fast times. The track features two long jump/ triple jump parallel approaches with four pits. It has eight pole vault plant boxes and four parallel pole vault runways, a pair of shot put areas, bi-directional javelin runways and outstanding sightlines for all field events. The facility was resurfaced in 2010 and certified by the IAAF. The home venue for IU track and field is the ninth track on U.S. soil to receive IAAF certification and is one of only six on a U.S. college campus. The Hoosiers claim the only IAAF certified venue in the Big Ten.
