Friday, May 6, 2011 | Baseball
Florida sophomore right-hander Hudson Randall (Atlanta, Ga.) was announced as a quarterfinalist for the 2011 Pitcher of the Year Award by The College Baseball Hall of Fame on Friday. The list features 25 of the nation's finest Division I pitchers.
Randall has a team-high eight victories for the fourth-ranked Gators and is 8-2 with a 2.05 earned run average in 12 starts this year. A two-time SEC Pitcher of the Week, he has recorded 44 strikeouts and issued four walks in 79 innings this season, while holding foes to a .223 batting average. In league action, Randall is 6-2 with a 2.50 ERA and has collected wins over No. 5 LSU, No. 4 South Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama and Ole Miss.
“The process of shrinking the list of top pitchers to 25 is never easy,” said Justin Knowles, Pitcher of the Year committee co-chair.
College baseball's version of the Cy Young Award, the Pitcher of the Year Award will be presented in Lubbock, Texas, on July 3 as part of the College Baseball Hall of Fame's Night of Champions.
Vanderbilt features three pitchers among the Watch List. Sonny Gray is 9-2 with a 1.91 ERA and 86 strikeouts in 75.1 innings. Grayson Garvin is 9-1 with a 2.26 ERA and closer Navery Moore has a 3-1 record with nine saves and a 0.40 ERA in 21 appearances. Texas and Virginia each have two pitchers on the Watch List.
“For three schools to be represented by more than one pitcher is really impressive,” said Landon Holly, Pitcher of the Year committee co-chair. “It's easy to see why their teams are having such outstanding seasons.”
There are 11 different conferences represented on the Watch List, with the Big 12 and the SEC each having six representatives.
Taylor Jungmann of Texas and Tyler Ray of Troy are tied for the nation's lead in wins with 10. Trevor Bauer of UCLA has 142 strikeouts followed by Danny Hultzen's 112 to lead the Watch List in that category.
