Former Gator Hoops Star Brewer Celebrates NBA Title
Monday, June 13, 2011 | Men's Basketball
Former University of Florida men's basketball standout Corey Brewer became the fourth Gator player in the last six years to be part of an NBA championship team, as his Dallas Mavericks defeated the Miami Heat in six games to claim the title on Sunday night.
Brewer was a member of Florida's 2006 and 2007 national title teams and was the Most Outstanding Player of the 2007 Final Four while in a Gator uniform.
The Portland, Tenn., native began the season with the Minnesota Timberwolves before being traded to the New York Knicks on Feb. 21 and eventually ended up with the Mavericks in March. He played in 13 regular season games for Dallas, as well as six games during the playoffs.
Also celebrating the Mavericks' title is former Gator manager Mike Weinar, who serves as Special Assistant to Head Coach Rick Carlisle. Weinar worked for the Gators from 2003-08, and was head manager for the Gators' second national championship in 2007.
Brewer is the fourth former Gator basketball player in the last six years to be a part of an NBA Championship team, and just the fifth ever. Udonis Haslem (an opponent in this year's NBA Finals) and Jason Williams were starters for the Heat when they won the 2006 NBA crown. Matt Bonner was a member of the San Antonio Spurs when they won the title in 2007. Vernon Maxwell was a member of the Houston Rockets 1994 and 1995 title teams.
