Former Gators Heisman winner Danny Wuerffel is recovering from a medical scare.
Wuerffel spent time in the hospital this week suffering from Guillian-Barre Syndrome, a rare disorder of the nervous system in which the body's immune system attacks part of the peripheral nervous system.
The first symptoms of this disorder include varying degrees of weakness or tingling sensations in the legs according to the National Health Institute's official website.
Desire Street Ministries Board Chairman Luder Whitlock, in a statement released by the faith-based organization Wuerffel directs, said the 37-year-old Wuerffel is appreciative of all the support since news broke that he was hospitalized earlier this week.
“Fortunately, an early diagnosis identified the disease, permitting swift medical treatment,'' Whitlock said. “Consequently, his GBS specialist expects a full recovery. Meanwhile, Danny has asked me to express his appreciation for the prayers, love and support he has received during this time.''
According to Whitlock, Wuerffel contracted GBS as a result of a recent stomach virus. Wuerffel attended UF's annual Orange and Blue Debut spring game in early April along with fellow Heisman winner Tim Tebow for the unveiling of bronze statues in their honor outside Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.
According to a press released, updates on Wuerffel's progress will be posted periodically at www.desirestreet.org and on the charitable organization's Facebook page at www.facebook.com/desirestreet.
Wuerffel led the Gators to four consecutive SEC titles and the 1996 national title during his career. After playing for New Orleans, Green Bay, Chicago and Washington in the NFL, Wuerffel started working full-time at Desire Street Ministries, where he now serves as executive director.
