Florida rising junior Tyler McCumber (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) fired a tournament total of 1-under par 285 to capture the 94th Florida State Amateur Championship this past weekend at the Doral Golf Resort and Spa.
“This was a big win for Tyler,” said head coach Buddy Alexander. “It's not surprising in that he is a very talented golfer, but this has been his biggest win to date and to do it at a place where his dad won twice on Tour is something very special for their family.”
McCumber, who was named to the SEC Community Service Team this past season, put together rounds of 72, 74, 68 and 71 to best the field of 168 competitors.
This past season with the Gators, McCumber had 83.3 percent of his rounds counted with a 4.2 stroke differential and finished the season with a 73.7 stroke average in 33 rounds. Additionally, McCumber recorded three top-10 finishes, including a career-best third place finish at the Jerry Pate Invitational in Birmingham, Ala.
Started in 1914, the FSGA State Amateur is the oldest continuous sporting event in the state as well as the largest amateur event in Florida.
