Six Gators Selected to Coaches Pre-Season All-SEC Teams
Thursday, July 14, 2011 | Football
Six Gator players – Jeff Demps (Winter Garden, Fla.), Caleb Sturgis (St. Augustine, Fla.), Jon Bostic (Wellington, Fla.), Jelani Jenkins (Olney, Md.), Trey Burton (Venice, Fla.) and Andre Debose (Sanford, Fla.) – have been named to the Southeastern Conference Coaches Pre-Season All-SEC Teams, announced today by the league.
Demps and Sturgis were both named second-team honorees. Demps has rushed for 1,901 yards and 17 touchdowns during his three seasons in the Orange and Blue. He is coming off a successful 2010 season where he led the Gators in several statistical categories including rushing yards (551), carries (92), yards per game (50.1) and all-purpose yards (927). Sturgis, who is coming off a medical redshirt in 2010, was a 2009 Lou Groza Award semifinalist and has converted on 24-of-34 field goals, with a career-long of 56-yards. He has also made 65-of-70 extra points during his tenure with the Gators.
Bostic and Jenkins represent Florida's defense on the third-team. Bostic is coming off an impressive sophomore season, appearing in all 13 games and finishing tied for third on the team with 57 tackles (36 solo and 21 assisted). Additionally, the Wellington, Fla. native recorded three interceptions, ranking him eighth nationally among linebackers. Jenkins, a 2010 SEC All-Freshman team selection, made a strong impression during his first season on the field in which he tallied 78 tackles, tops among SEC freshmen and 21st overall in the Conference.
Burton and Debose also represent Florida on the third-team. Burton was honored as the third-team's all-purpose player after a breakout freshman campaign where he led the Orange and Blue with 12 touchdowns, including a six-touchdown outburst against Kentucky. For his efforts last season, Burton was named to 2010 SEC All-Freshman Team and was twice selected as the SEC Freshman of the Week. Debose was honored as the third-team's return specialist after a stellar redshirt freshman season where he returned two kickoffs for touchdowns and averaged 28.0 yards per return.
The Gators open the 2011 season on Sept. 3 when Florida Atlantic travels to the Swamp.
