Four Gators Selected to 2011 SEC Media Days Pre-season All-SEC Football Team
Friday, July 22, 2011 | Football
Four players from the University of Florida football team were selected to the 2011 Southeastern Conference Media Days Pre-Season All-SEC Teams, announced today by the league office. In addition, the Gators were picked to finish third in the SEC Eastern Division and received two votes as SEC Champion.
Redshirt junior kicker Caleb Sturgis (St. Augustine, Fla.) was named the second-team placekicker. Sturgis, who received a medical redshirt for the 2010 season, was a 2009 Lou Groza Award semifinalist and has converted 24-of-34 field goal attempts, with a career-long of 56 yards. He has also made 65-of-70 extra point attempts and has averaged 64.2 yards on 216 kickoffs in his career.
Junior linebacker Jon Bostic (Wellington, Fla.) and sophomore defensive tackle Dominique Easley (Staten Island, N.Y.) were selected to the third-team defense. Bostic is coming off an impressive sophomore season, appearing in all 13 games and finishing tied for third on the team with 57 tackles. He also recorded three interceptions, ranking eighth nationally among linebackers. Easley played in six games as a true freshman and made four tackles, but he had a breakout performance this spring and is expected to be a force in the middle of the Gators defensive line this season.
Trey Burton, a sophomore running back from Venice, Fla., was named the third-team all-purpose player. Last season, Burton led the Orange and Blue with 12 touchdowns, including a six-touchdown performance against Kentucky, while playing multiple positions for the Gators. For his efforts last season, Burton was named to the 2010 SEC All-Freshman Team and was twice selected as the SEC Freshman of the Week.
Bostic (Third-Team LB), Burton (Third-Team AP) and Sturgis (Second-Team PK) were also selected to the 2011 SEC Coaches Pre-season All-SEC Teams.
South Carolina received 114 votes as the SEC East favorite followed by Georgia (38 votes) and Florida (12 votes). Tennessee was picked to finish fourth in the division, while Kentucky and Vanderbilt were picked to finish fifth and sixth, respectively.
111 media members picked Alabama to win the SEC West, and the Crimson Tide received 98 votes as the favorite to win the SEC Championship.
