The College Football Performance Awards (CFPA) announced Wednesday that four Gators were named to their offensive watch list for the 2011 season. Running backs Trey Burton (Venice, Fla.), Jeff Demps (Winter Garden, Fla.) and Chris Rainey (Lakeland, Fla.) were joined by wide receiver Deonte Thompson (Belle Glade, Fla.) on their respective position watch lists.
Burton, a true sophomore, was named to the 2010 SEC All-Freshman Team and named SEC Freshman of the Week twice during the 2010 season. Burton led the team with 12 total touchdowns last season, including a six touchdown performance against Kentucky.
Jeff Demps is entering his senior year after leading the team in rushing during the 2010 campaign with 551 yards on 92 carries (50.1 yards per game). The speedster was named SEC Special Teams Player of the Week once last season and was one of only nine players in the country in 2010 with a rush of over 70 yards and kick return of over 50 yards.
Redshirt senior, Chris Rainey is coming off a season in which he had a team-best three receiving touchdowns in only eight games. Rainey, who sees time at both running back and wide receiver, scored in five of the eight games he participated in last season.
Thompson, who led the squad with 38 receptions, is coming off his best season in a Gator uniform. The Belle Glade, Fla. native recorded a career high 570 receiving yards in 2010.
According their official website, the purpose of the CFPA is to provide the most scientifically rigorous conferments in college football. Recipients are selected exclusively based upon objective scientific rankings of the extent to which individual players increase the overall effectiveness of their teams.
