Monday, August 15, 2011 | Soccer
A pair of University of Florida soccer All-Americans - senior Tahnai Annis (Zanesville, Ohio) and junior Kathryn Williamson (McKinney, Texas) are among the 42 players included in the Women's 2011 Missouri Athletic Club's Hermann Trophy Watch List released by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) today.
Last December, both Annis and Williamson were named NSCAA All-Americans. Williamson received numerous honors in addition to her spot on the All-America second team. Those include being selected to the NSCAA All-South Region first-team, named the Southeastern Conference Defensive Player of the Year and named to the All-SEC first team. In 2010, Williamson started every match at center back and led all field players with an average of 88.29 minutes per match.
In 2010, Annis finished second in the conference in points (33) and goals (13). Her 33 points led the team and her total of 13 goals was one behind McKenzie Barney's conference and team-leading 14. Annis was named to the NSCAA All-South Region first team and also earned a spot on the All-SEC second team. Through three seasons as a Gator, Annis holds the No. 7 spot on Florida's career points list with 70 off of her 28 goals and 14 assists.
During the course of the 2011 regular season, Florida will face six other teams with players on the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List – Alabama (1 player), Auburn (1), UCLA (1), Florida State (2), South Carolina (1) and Texas A&M (2)
Considered the highest individual honor in intercollegiate soccer, the MAC's Hermann Trophy recipient is selected by Division I head coaches who are current NSCAA members. In late fall, the list will be narrowed to 15 semifinalists. Three finalists will be named in late November. They will be invited to the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis on for a news conference on January 6, 2012, where the winner will be announced.
Florida is No. 9 on the NSCAA/Continental Tire preseason poll released Aug. 9. The Gators are the five-time defending Southeastern Conference champions and advanced to the NCAA Tournament each of the last eight seasons.
Soccer will again be the first Florida team to compete this season, as the Gators open the 2011 season with four consecutive road matches. The season begins at Miami on Aug. 19 and then at Florida International on Aug. 21. The second weekend sends the Gators to Knoxville, Tenn., to face a pair of preseason top-20 teams who earned NCAA Championship berths in 2010. Florida faces No. 11 Texas A&M on Aug. 26 and then meets No. 16 UCLA on Aug. 28. The home season begins Sept. 2 at 7 p.m. versus Texas Tech.
