Both teams turned in come-from-behind wins in Friday's action at the Classic.
A goal in the final 15 seconds of regulation gave the Gators a 3-2 win over No. 15 Texas A&M Friday in the opening match of the Lady Vol Classic. Junior McKenzie Barney scored the game-winner off the cross from senior Jazmyne Avant. It was the only goal of the second half after each team turned in a pair in the opening 45 minutes. Junior Erika Tymrak scored the first goal of the match off the through ball from freshman Havana Solaun. The Aggies scored the next two goals, taking the lead in the 36th minute. A diving header by Taylor Travis off the cross from Lindsay Thompson in the 39th minute knotted the match at 2-all.
UCLA, ranked as high as No. 1 on the current TopDrawerSoccer poll, has a lineup dotted with decorated players, including senior forward Sydney Leroux, a preseason All-America selection by Soccer America. Samantha Mewis is among Soccer America's 10-member preseason “Freshmen of Influence” list. UCLA scored twice in the final 10 minutes to open its Classic play with a 2-1 win over Tennessee. The Bruins own a 3-2 lead in the all-time series with Florida, winning the last two meetings – a 3-2 decision in 2006 NCAA Round of 16 play in Los Angeles and a 2009 3-0 win in Illinois during the regular season.
Florida is picked to repeat as the Southeastern Conference champions in the preseason vote by the league coaches. UCLA is picked to finish second behind Stanford in a preseason vote by the Pac 12 coaches. The Gators have won 11 SEC titles, including the last four, since the program started in 1995.
