The two teams last met in Gainesville in 2008. That was an unusual weekend for the Gators, as they lost 2-0 at Portland on Friday and then flew across the country to face the Jayhawks on Sunday in Gainesville, claiming a 2-1 win.
The Gators opened the weekend with a 2-0 win at Missouri, ranked No. 24 by Soccer America. Both goals Friday came late in each half and were scored by freshman Annie Speese off assists from Jo Dragotta. The first came off a 19-yard shot with just two minutes left in the opening half. Her second came in the 86th minute. She received the ball off a free kick and brought it forward to almost the same spot as her first half goal and her shot scored in the upper slot. The pair of goals are the first of Speese's career, as she leads the Gators with four assists.
Florida will be the third top-25 opponent for Kansas this season. The Jayhawks have a win over then No. 22 San Diego (2-1) and lost 2-1 OT to current No. 19 Tennessee in the season opener. KU did not have a match on Friday. Freshman Ingrid Vidal of Columbia leads the Jayhawks with 14 points off of five goals and four assists. The six wins by the Jayhawks already this season matches its 2010 total number of wins. Kansas is receiving votes in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) poll.
