No. 7 Gators Continue Fall Campaign at Inverness Intercollegiate
Sunday, September 25, 2011 | Men's Golf
Coming off a seventh place finish in the season opening Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational, the No. 7 Florida men's golf team will return to action when it travels to Toledo, Ohio, to compete in the Inverness Invitational on Monday, Sept. 26, and Tuesday, Sept. 27.
The Gators will bring a lineup of juniors T.J. Vogel (Cooper City, Fla.), Tyler McCumber (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) and Tommy Mou (Bradenton, Fla.), and freshmen J.D. Tomlinson (Gainesville, Fla.), James Monnerville (Vero Beach, Fla.) and Eric Banks (Truro, Canada) to the par-71, 7,255 yard, course. Five Gators will count towards the team score, while one player will compete as an individual.
“I'm pretty comfortable with the first four that we'll send out there, but for the first time in my coaching career I'm going to decide who my fifth guy is based off a practice round on Sunday,” head coach Buddy Alexander explained. “James and Eric have been so close in the matches and stroke play competitions we've had down here that I felt I should see how they do up at Inverness before I make a final decision. So we'll make a decision based off of that and I trust that, regardless of the outcome, both James and Eric should get a lot of valuable experience out of this trip.”
The 11-team field at the Inverness Invitational consists of East Tennessee State, Florida, Kent State, Kentucky, Liberty, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Penn State, South Alabama, and Toledo. Of the teams competing, UF (7) and Ohio State are ranked (20) in the Golfworld/Nike Golf Coaches Poll, while East Tennessee State, Kent State, Liberty and Michigan are receiving votes.
The Gators are returning to Inverness for the first time since 2007. UF has competed in the Inverness Invitational four times in program history capturing the tournament title in 2002 and 2005 and finishing third in 2006 and 2007.
Tee times for Monday's 36 holes will begin with a 9:00 a.m. shotgun start. Tee times for Tuesday's 18 holes also beginning with a 9:00 a.m. shotgun start. Live scoring for the tournament will be available through golfstat.com.
