Tuesday, January 31, 2012 | Track and Field
Senior thrower Kemal Mesic (Sarajevo, Bosnia) has been named the Southeastern Conference Co-Men's Field Athlete of the Week for his record-breaking performance at the Texas A&M Challenge presented by Mondo America this past weekend, the league offices in Birmingham, Ala. announced Tuesday.
Mesic, who picks up his third career SEC weekly honor and second of the season, captured the shot put title at the Texas A&M Challenge, registering the top mark in the nation with a throw of 20.31m/66-7.75. This is the third consecutive weekly honor for the Gator program, as freshman jumper Taylor Burke (Medina, Ohio) was named the Southeastern Conference Co-Women's Freshman of the Week last Tuesday.
Mesic broke his previous Florida program record of 19.95m/65-5.50, which was set just two weeks ago at the Crimson Tide Indoor Opener. Mesic recorded the longest throw of the day in College Station, besting his opponents by over two meters. The Sarajevo native is one of only six collegiate athletes to throw more than 20 meters indoors in the last three seasons.
Florida now looks ahead to this weekend, as the Gators travel to Blacksburg, Va. to compete in the Virginia Tech Elite meet on Friday and Saturday.
