Florida and Tennessee combined for 1,060 yards and 83 points, with the Gators getting the better of the Volunteers on both accounts in a 43-30 shootout victory at Neyland Stadium.

UF rushed for 308 yards, led by Neal Anderson's 178, with John L. Williams breaking loose for a 47-yard TD run with less than a minute to play the ice the Gators' first win over the Vols since 1971.

The win was the fourth straight for 14th-ranked Florida, which was placed on three years probation for NCAA rules violations under Coach Charley Pell, who resigned three games into the season. UF, banned from bowl eligibility due to the sanctions, won its next five games, too, and finished 9-1-1 to celebrate the first Southeastern Conference title in school history.

That championship, of course, was stripped by league presidents the following summer.
