On this date in Gators history: Oct. 8, 1989

Less than 24 hours after beating LSU 16-13 on the road with a field goal as time expired, Gators coach Galen Hall was forced to resign amid an NCAA probe that found Hall made a child-support payment for a player and made illegal supplementary payments to members of his coaching staff.
UF Interim President Robert Bryan announced the change, along with the promotion of defensive coordinator Gary Darnell to interim head coach.
"We made this move because the man violated his contract and committed major violations of NCAA rules," Bryan said. "We cannot allow him to coach."
Said Hall: “I resign with great regret, particularly that events compelled this decision within the season. However, I have recognized that my actions may jeopardize our football program, particularly given the prior history of the university.”
The Gators had come off seasons of probation in 1986.
Hall's resignation set in motion the search for a new Florida coach -- and we all know where (and with whom) that ended.
