Florida head coach Tim Walton met with the media Monday as part of the Gators' All-Sports Media Day. Walton discussed UF's five contests over the weekend in California, along with assessing the 2012 squad's performances through the first 14 games of the season.
The No. 1/3 Florida softball team is coming off a five-game stay at the Cathedral City Classic in Palm Springs, Calif., where the Gators went 4-1 on the weekend to improve to 13-1 overall on the 2012 season. UF defeated Top-25 teams in No. 16/14 Texas A&M and No. 8 Texas, in addition to topping BYU and Boise State, while No. 5/7 Washington gave the Gators their first loss of the season. Four Florida student-athletes returned to their native California for UF's annual trip to the tournament.
Sophomore ace Hannah Rogers (Lake Wales, Fla.) picked up three wins in the circle for UF, while freshman Lauren Haeger (Peoria, Ariz.) tallied one win against BYU and the Washington loss, as classmate Alyssa Bache (Clearwater, Fla.) earned her first career save against the Cougars. The trio collaborated for 34 strikeouts, led by Rogers' 20, while limiting opponents to a .223 batting clip.
With two shutouts against BYU and Boise State, Florida now has seven on the 2012 campaign to go along with seven run-rule victories and one extra-innings win against USF in Tampa.
The Gators next host Eastern Michigan Thursday evening before playing host to the Eagles, Campbell University, Tennessee State and Gardner-Webb at Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium March 2-4 for the 2012 Lipton Invitational.
