Mikey Meagher Named ALC Defensive Player of the Week
Tuesday, March 13, 2012 | Lacrosse
Florida junior goalkeeper Mikey Meagher (Liverpool, N.Y.) was named ALC Defensive Player of the Week this evening after her outstanding play against No. 15 Georgetown and Temple. It is the second time in her career that Meagher has earned this honor, and the fourth time a Gator has done so. This marks the third time this season that a Florida player has earned a weekly award.
Meagher made 17 saves and allowed 10 goals for a .630 save percentage in 90 minutes in goal this week. Meagher faced 38 shots at No. 15 Georgetown, but held the Hoyas to single digits, making a school-record 15 saves in the game to lead the Gators to a 12-9 road victory. Meagher then allowed just one goal through the entire first half against Temple, making two saves.
Through the first eight games of the season, Meagher has made 55 saves and allowed 46 goals in 354:45 minutes of play, earning a .545 save percentage and averaging 7.78 goals per game. The Liverpool, N.Y., native currently ranks third in the nation in save percentage, 13th in goals against average and 14th in total saves.
Vanderbilt's Ally Carey was named ALC Offensive Player of the Week and Johns Hopkins' KC Emerson earned Rookie of the Week. Carey helped the Vanderbilt squad rally from a two-goal deficit to a two-goal lead on the road, scoring three of VU's final four goals in the 10-8 win over Canisius. After she scored the game-winner, Carey snared the draw control, one of three on the day for the senior. She added three ground balls in the victory. Earlier in the week, Carey led all players with six draw controls in the win over Boston College, including the game's final one as the Eagles had pulled within one with five minutes to play.
Emerson made her first start for the Blue Jays and stopped six shots while allowing just four goals as Hopkins beat 19th-ranked Towson, 5-4, at Homewood Wednesday night. Emerson made four of her saves in the second half, including three in the final 11:23, with Hopkins leading 5-4. One of her four second half saves came on a Towson on a fast-break as she went in all alone on Emerson, but the freshman goalie was up to the task.
The Gators return to action on Wednesday, when they host the Seawolves of Stony Brook University. Opening draw is set for 3 p.m.
