Tim Tebow is one of Time Magazine's "100 Most Influential People in the World."
Former Gators quarterback Tim Tebow stands in bronze outside Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, so that says all you probably need to know about his standing in Gator Nation.
And as he prepares for his third NFL season – first with the New York Jets – Tebow is clearly one of professional sports' most polarizing figures.
But what about Tebow's influence across the globe? Does Tebow's overwhelming presence in American sports and entertainment media reach beyond the U.S.?
According to Time magazine, the answer is a resounding yes.
In its latest ranking of “The 100 Most Influential People in the World,” Tebow joins such figures as President Barack Obama, singer Adele, and U Thein Sein, the President of Burma, on the list.
Tebow is the only NFL player on the list and is joined by a fellow New York sports figure – Knicks guard Jeremy Lin – among the small group of professional athletes from around the globe Time views worthy of consideration.
Here is Time's synopsis of Tebow, written by Lin:
Watching Tim Tebow play football, you can observe many things about his character. You see his fierce competitiveness, his strong work ethic and how he is a leader that his teammates trust and respect.
But it is the qualities that Tim, 24, embodies in his life off the field that truly set him apart. He is unashamed of his convictions and faith, and he lives a life that consistently reflects his values, day in and day out. Through his foundation, he constantly reaches out to people and communities in need of hope. He realizes what he has been blessed with and seeks to help those who are worse off. As athletes, we pour our hearts into winning games. Tim is a reminder that life is about much more than that.
