Junior left-hander/designated hitter Brian Johnson (Cocoa Beach, Fla.), freshman outfielder Justin Shafer (Lake Wales, Fla.) and freshman Casey Turgeon (Palm Harbor, Fla.) were chosen to the 2012 Southeastern Conference All-Tournament squad announced on Sunday.
The second-ranked Gators (42-18) finished 2-2 at the event, reaching the semifinal round for the third year in a row. After defeating Auburn (6-1 on Tuesday), Florida fell to Vanderbilt (2-1 on Thursday) and then rebounded to eliminate No. 4 South Carolina (7-2 on Friday) before being ousted by the Commodores (8-6 on Saturday). No. 25 Mississippi State captured its first tourney title since 2005 with a 3-0 shutout of Vanderbilt on Sunday.
Johnson made the All-Tourney squad at both pitcher and designated hitter after the southpaw tossed his first career complete game in the victory over the Gamecocks (9.0 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 5 K) and he batted .375 (6-for-16) over the four games with a team-high five RBI. In Saturday's contest versus Vanderbilt, the two-way standout went 4-for-5 with a pair of doubles and drove in four runs.
Turgeon tied for the team lead with a .429 (6-for-14) clip over the Gators' four outings, highlighted by two-RBI performances in the triumphs over Auburn (1-for-3 with a two-run double in the sixth) and USC (2-for-4 with a two-run single in the fifth). The second baseman also set a team season high with eight assists in playing flawless defense in the first meeting with Vanderbilt.
Shafer hit. .294 (5-for-17) and had at least one hit in every Florida game, featuring a two-run single that opened the scoring against AU and an RBI single in the sixth against the Tigers.
Named as one of the 16 host sites for NCAA Regionals, Florida will learn on Monday at 12 p.m. which three schools will be visiting McKethan Stadium for the double-elimination tournament that starts on Friday. The 64-team field will be announced live on ESPNU.
