Kelsey Horton & Michelle Moultrie Named 2012 Capital One Academic All-Americans
Tuesday, May 29, 2012 | Softball
Gator softball players Michelle Moultrie (Jacksonville, Fla.) and Kelsey Horton (Valrico, Fla.) were both named to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America softball squads, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) last week. For the fifth-consecutive year, the Orange and Blue boasted at least one Academic All-American, led by four in both 2009 and 2011. Moultrie and Horton both lead the way on the Academic All-America Second Team, Horton as a catcher and Moultrie as one of three outfielders on the second team.
Moultrie, the 2012 SEC Player of the Year, and Horton both advanced to the national ballot after being named to the Capital One Academic All-District 4 First Team earlier in May. Since Florida head coach Tim Walton stepped on campus at the helm of the Florida softball program, a staggering 21 Academic All-District and/or Academic All-America accolades have found their way to the UF program through the diligent classroom work of 11 Gator softball student-athletes, highlighted by a nation-leading four Academic All-Americans last year.
Moultrie, who completed her undergrad degree at the University of Florida in Business Administration with a specialization in Sport Management May 5, was one of those school-record tying four Academic All-Americans last season. Moultrie made it back-to-back years of both Academic All-District and Academic All-America honors after earning both in 2011 as an Academic All-America Third Team pick and jumping one team up to the 2012 Academic All-America Second Team.
For Horton, who boasts a 3.7 GPA as a Nutritional Sciences major, the Academic All-America honor is the first of her career after being an All-District selection in both 2011 and 2012.
Both Horton and Moultrie have additionally been named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll through each year of their Gator careers, respectively, while both were named All-SEC selections this season – Moultrie as a first team outfielder and Horton as a second team catcher.
The duo is also in contention for All-America honors after being two of four Gators named to the 2012 NFCA All-Southeast Region Team May 17, Moultrie a first-team selection and Horton a second-team pick. Stay tuned to www.GatorZone.com for the All-America teams, released Wednesday, May 30.
