London Calling: Gators Travel to Omaha for 2012 US Olympic Swim Trials
Sunday, June 24, 2012 | Women's Swimming & Diving
It has been four years since the best swimmers in the United States gathered for Olympic Trials at the CenturyLink Center in Omaha, Neb., to earn a spot on the United States' 2008 Olympic Squad. Now, after four years of training and long hours, both in and out of the water, a group of Gator swimmers will make that trip once again, some for the first time, to earn a ticket to London this summer and a chance to represent the Red, White and Blue.
Trials will run eight days, beginning on Monday, June 25 and come to a close on Monday, July 2. Each day of competition prelims will begin at 11 a.m. ET, with finals to follow at 7:45 p.m. ET.
All together, the Gators will have 27 representatives at the 2012 US Olympic Swim Trials. The list includes current swimmers Elizabeth Beisel (North Kingstown, R.I.), Jamie Bohunicky (Gainesville, Fla.), Nicholas Caldwell (Sarasota, Fla.), Matt Curby (Oviedo, Fla.), Brad deBorde (Longwood, Fla.), Molly Dubrasky (Estero, Fla.), Matt Elliott (Peoria, Ill.), Kaitlin Frehling (St. Petersburg, Fla.), Colin Hamilton (Jacksonville, Fla.), Cameron Martin (Clearwater, Fla.), Alicia Mathieu (Marlborough, Conn.), Sharla Milne (Lithia, Fla.), Ricky Munch (Clifton, Va.), Lauren Neidigh (Orange Park, Fla.), Carlos Omana (Miami, Fla.), Rebecca Rainer (Richmond, Va.), Trish Regan (Carmel, Ind.), Austin Ringquist (Hillsboro, Ore.), Conor Signorin (East Windsor, N.J.), Billy Silva (Gainesville, Fla.), Jordan Smith (Longwood, Fla.) and Jason Taylor (Plant City, Fla.).
Conor Dwyer (Winnetka, Ill.), Mike Joyce (Sewell, N.J.), Ryan Lochte (Daytona Beach, Fla.), Alex Martin (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) and Dara Torres (Parkland, Fla.) highlight a shorter list of former Florida swimmers who, alongside of group of youngsters, will look for a chance to represent the United States at the 2012 Olympic Games.
Beisel, Lochte and Torres have already appeared in one, three and four Olympic games, respectively.
Last time Biesel competed in front of the five Olympic rings, she was the youngest member on the United States swimming roster. Now, with a World Championship title to her name, and textile-best record after her performance in the 400 IM at the 2011 FINA World Championships under her belt, the Gator All-American is looking for the same opportunity in Omaha this week.
After a stellar summer a year ago, and breakthrough performance at the 2008 Games in Beijing, Lochte has been dubbed one of the main stories of the 2012 Olympics in London. The six-time Olympic medalist is vying for his third appearance at the Games, while fellow Gator great Torres is looking to make history and earn a ticket to her sixth Olympic Games. In 2008, the then 41-year old swimmer made history as the first swimmer from the United States to compete in five Olympic Games (1984, 1988, 1992, 2000 and 2008).
All but the fastest heats of preliminaries will be webcast live at www.usaswimming.org June 25-July 1. The fastest 2-4 heats of preliminaries will be broadcast on tape delay by NBC Sports later that day. Please not that finals will air live on NBC at 8 p.m. ET and at 7 p.m. CT. Finals will air tape delayed in the mountain time zone at 7 p.m. and at 8 p.m. in the pacific time zone.
