Incoming University of Florida freshman Bridget Sloan is 10th after the first day of the senior competition at the 2012 Visa Championships at the Chaifetz Arena. Sloan has a 56.250 total score in the all-around competition.
The women's competition concludes on Sunday, June 10, with live television coverage on NBC Sports beginning at 4 p.m. ET. Performances at the Visa Championships, which serve as USA Gymnastics' national championships, will determine the gymnasts who advance to the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials - Gymnastics in San Jose, Calif., June 28-July 1.
In her first all-around competition since 2009, Sloan of Pittsboro, Ind./Sharp's Gymnastics, a member of the silver medal-winning 2008 Olympic team and the 2009 World Championships all-around champion, earned her top score on the uneven bars, a 15.100, which was good for fifth place on the event.
Sloan signed with Florida in April of 2011 and deferred her enrollment at Florida until the fall of 2012 as she attempts to earn her second consecutive spot on the U.S. Olympic team. She has represented the U.S. National Team in 15 international competitions, including three World Championship teams (2010, 2009 and 2007, the first as a reserve athlete). In 2008 at age 16, Sloan was the youngest member of the silver-medal winning U.S. Olympic team. A year later, she won gold by taking the top spot in the all-around competition at the 2009 World Championships. She's claimed six Visa Championship medals (gold for 2009 all-around, uneven bars and floor; silver for 2007 floor; bronze for 2008 bars and 2006 beam).
Event leaders after the first day of competition are Jordyn Wieber and Gabrielle Douglas (all-around – 60.65), McKayla Maroney (vault – 15.925), Kyla Ross (uneven bars – 15.50), Sarah Finnegan (balance beam -15.35) and Alexandra Raisman (floor exercise – 15.45).
The second day of women's senior competition is scheduled for Sunday at 3:30 p.m. ET, with television coverage beginning at 4 p.m.. The scores from both days will be added together to determine the all-around rankings and national champions.
