Tony McQuay and the U.S. men's 4x400-meter relay claimed a silver medal at the 2012 Olympic Games on Friday, Aug. 10. Fellow Gator Jeff Demps (U.S.A.) torched the track as a part of Team USA for a new American record in the men's 4x100-meter relay, while Csaba Gercsak (Hungary) competed in the men's 10km marathon.
Swimming
Former Gator Csaba Gercsak (Hungary) competed in the final swimming event of the 2012 Olympic Games, taking part of the grueling 10km marathon at Hyde Park. Gercsak finished 18th overall in a time of 1:51:30.9, coming in about two minutes behind the winner who finished in a time of 1:49:55.1. Gercsak was in 17th after the first lap and progressively moved up as he was 10th at lap four, but fell to 13th at lap five before eventually finishing 18th in a field of 25 swimmers.
Track & Field
Tony McQuay (U.S.A.) ran the third leg of the men's 4x400-meter relay for Team USA, finishing in a season's best 2:57.05 to take home the silver medal for the Red, White and Blue. McQuay earned the Gators' 19th medal of these games and the fourth medal for the track & field program at the 2012 London Olympics.
“I did my job for the day,” McQuay said. “I'm disappointed it wasn't enough. The outcome is not what we wanted, our mission was gold. We got silver, but we have to be blessed with our opportunity today, because a lot of people don't have this opportunity, and God selected us four people to come out here and run this relay.”
Jeff Demps (U.S.A.) ran the opening leg of the men's 4x100-meter relay for Team USA, setting a new American record of 37.38 and earning the top spot in the preliminaries. The U.S. will race in lane 7 on Saturday at 4 p.m. ET. The relay lineup will be announced pre-race.
“I just wanted to come out and have fun and enjoy the moment,” Demps said. “There was no pressure, I was just excited.”
