The Florida football team will open the season ranked No. 23 in the preseason USA Today/ESPN Top 25 football coaches' poll. The Gators ended the 2011 season unranked after defeating Ohio State in the TaxSlayer.com Gator Bowl. UF ended the season with a 7-6 record, but returns 19 starters for 2012, including 10 of 11 starters on the defensive side of the ball.

AFCA policy bars schools under major NCAA or conference sanctions from receiving votes. Schools affected this season are North Carolina, Ohio State and Penn State. Central Florida will remain eligible until the NCAA rules on the school's appeal.
