Starting Wednesday: Daily Gators history lessons
Tuesday, August 21, 2012 | Chris Harry
GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- School starts Wednesday and with it a new daily Harry Fodder blog feature, also.
Sort of a mini-history class.
Over the course of the next several months, This Day in Gators History will commemorate the anniversary of a moment that somehow impacted the University of Florida athletic program. Might be the outcome of a game or perhaps something that happened years before or years after the Gator (or Gators) in question actually wore orange and blue. Some items will be short, others with a little more detail, courtesy of my personal files from years covering the UF program and some trips to the third floor of the Smathers Libraries, home to the newspaper microfilm stash.
I like doing this stuff and want to hear what readers think of it, as researching history can be awfully time consuming. That said, I've banked enough to take us deep into the year, and will do my best to keep it up if readers enjoy it.
Note: The photo above is the UF campus entrance at University Avenue and 13th Street, circa 1906. Wonder if the guy who shot the picture was coming from Leonardo's.
Anyway, give it a week or so, then give me some feedback via our Facebook posts on the Florida Gators page, my Twitter account at @GatorZoneChris or via email at chrish@gators.ufl.edu.
Will gladly take any historic tips, too.
