Monday, September 10, 2012 | Football
University of Florida redshirt senior kicker Caleb Sturgis (St. Augustine, Fla.) has been named the SEC Special Teams Player of the Week, announced by the league Monday. It marks the third SEC weekly honor of his career as he had been previously recognized on Oct. 17, 2009 and Sept. 19, 2011.
Sturgis had another solid week for the Gators, as he connected for two field goals and two successful point-after attempts in the 20-17 win in the SEC opener against Texas A&M. He nailed a 51-yard field goal in the second quarter, extending his school-record of 50-plus yard field goals to seven. That number leads the nation among all active kickers.
He also recorded his 100th successful point after attempt in the win. On the season, Sturgis is 4-for-5 on field goals and 5-for-5 in extra points to rate second on the squad with 17 points. No. 18/17 Florida (2-0, 1-0 SEC) will face No. 23 Tennessee at Neyland Stadium in Knoxville, Tenn., on Saturday at 6 p.m. on ESPN.
