The Gators opened the season with a 13-0 win over Wyoming in the rain at Jacksonville.
The hero that day was UF quarterback Haywood Sullivan (left).
If that name rings a bell, yes, it's the same Haywood Sullivan who owned the Boston Red Sox from 1978-93. Sullivan was a quarterback for Coach Bob Woodruff, passing for 2,016 yards in an era when few teams bothered throwing the ball.
Sullivan was better known as a baseball player, an All-Southeastern Conference catcher who signed with the Red Sox out of college.
But that day in '51, Sullivan completed 11 of 16 passes, including a touchdown to Jim French, in a win that marked UF's first shutout victory since 1949.
