Florida Sweeps Singles on Day 2 at U-M Wolverine Invitational
Saturday, September 22, 2012 | Women's Tennis
The University of Florida women's tennis team swept all six singles matches it played against members from the University of Utah and Western Michigan at the Univ. of Michigan Women's Tennis Wolverine Invitational on Saturday at the Varsity Tennis Center.
“Like Friday, we came up short again in doubles, losing two of the three matches,” UF associate head coach Dave Balogh said. “But we returned to the court for singles focused and really strong. We got pushed more and played better. There were a couple close matches and it was good to see us dig deep and keep our composure.”
The Gators conclude action at the individual, non-flighted event on Sunday morning, when the team begins with doubles matches against Iowa at 9 a.m. ET, before facing members from Michigan later in the day in singles play.
Sofie Oyen (Leopoldsburg, Belgium), Alexandra Cercone (Seminole, Fla.), Olivia Janowicz (Palm Bay,Fla.), Brianna Morgan (Beverly Hills,Calif.), Danielle Collins (St. Petersburg, Fla.) and Caroline Hitimana (Waterloo, Belgium) each won their respective singles matches, with only Collins needing three sets to claim victory.
Hitimana took down Western Michigan's Jill Pastunink, 6-1, 6-4, while the rest of the Gators battled players from Utah, as Oyen defeated Sarah Pham, 7-5, 6-4, Cercone downed Tereza Bekerova, 6-3, 6-4, Janowicz claimed a 6-4, 6-4 victory against Callie Craig, 6-4, 6-4, Morgan topped Elena Najera, 6-1, 6-1, and Collins netted a 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 win versus Natasha Smith.
Florida began the day on the doubles court, where only Collins and Janowicz were able to pull out a win, as they defeated Michigan's Mimi Nguyen/Amy Zhu, 8-1. The win was Janowicz's 40th of her collegiate doubles career, while Collins earned her second victory in as many days of her collegiate tenure.
Cercone and Oyen dropped an 8-1 decision to Michigan's Ronit Yurovsky and Brooke Bolender and Hitimana and Morgan fell to Kristen Dodge and Sarah Lee.
Gator senior Lauren Embree (Marco Island, Fla.) is the only member of the team not in Ann Arbor, as she prepares to compete at an ITF professional tournament in Las Vegas, where qualifying action begins on Monday at the Amanda and Stacey Darling Memorial Tennis Center.
