Florida's Bill Cash kicked a 35-yard field goal in the second quarter and Florida State's Ken Kestner missed a 29-yard field goal three minutes into the fourth quarter.
That was the difference, as UF escaped its third meeting in the blossoming in-state rivalry against the Seminoles with a narrow 3-0 win at Florida Field, a game that featured far more action before kickoff than after.
An alleged attempt to bribe Florida fullback Jon MacBeth (left) to keep the score closer than the 13-point spread was revealed and two New York City men — one a University of Florida student – accused of making the bribe attempt were jailed before.
MacBeth told Coach Ray Graves about the men, and the two then told their story to Gainesville Police.
For that, MacBeth got a new nickname: “Honest Jon.”
