Graham Puts Up Second-Best Pentathlon Score in Gator History on Day One of SEC Championships
Saturday, February 23, 2013 | Track and Field
Junior Lorraine Graham (Springdale, Md.) used three event personal bests to continue her trek up the all-time lists on Friday, coming in fourth overall in the women's pentathlon with a new PR of 4,010 points. Her score is now second all-time in Florida school history behind teammate Brittany Harrell.
“For her, in her first year doing the multis, to be honest it's her first six months doing it, I think she did a great job,” Florida head coach Mike Holloway said. “You know me, I think we left some points out there but at the end of the day, if you had told our staff that she'd score over 4,000 points in her first year doing this, we'd have taken that back when we started in the fall.”
Graham started off the day with a personal best in the 60-meter hurdles, racing to finish third in her heat and overall in 8.44, good for 1,030 points. Her time moves her to third all-time in UF history.
The junior then moved on to the high jump, setting another PR on the day with her clearance of 1.60m/5-3, worth 736 points.
The Springdale, Md. native switched gears to the shot put, throwing just below her personal best in the event with her mark of 12.44m/40-9.75, scoring 690 points and finishing third overall.
Graham won her flight of the women's long jump and finished third overall with her leap of 6.13m/20-1.50. The jump was just under her indoor PB of 6.15m/20-2.25.
To finish, Graham competed in the 800 meters, racing to a new PR of 2:32.29. Her time added to her final score of 4,010 to earn her five points for the Gator women at the SEC Championships and bested her previous pentathlon PR by 83 points.
In her first two collegiate pentathlons, Graham has scored in the top-five in program history. Her 4,010 is top-20 in the NCAA and the third-best score all-time at Florida behind Harrell's 4,118 points at the 2012 NCAA Indoor Championships and 4,050 points at the 2012 SEC Indoor Championships.
“I think if you talk to Lorraine, she's definitely pleased but she's not satisfied,” Holloway noted. “I think it gets us off to a good start. They'll know we're ready based on what she did here because she had almost 100-point PB here. We're happy and very proud of Lorraine. She had the second-best all-time score in school history and she and Brit Harrell are really good friends, so I'm sure they'll have some good talks about that when she gets back to Gainesville.”
The action continues tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. CT. Getting things started for the Gators on Saturday will be the Gator foursome of David Levin (Altamonte Springs, Fla.), Jeremy Postin (Andover, Kan.), Kyle Strawn (Temecula, Calif.) and David Triassi (Jacksonville, Fla.), who will compete in the men's weight throw. All four men rank in the top-10 in Gator history in the event, with Postin owning the school record with his throw of 21.60m/70-10.50 at the Virginia Tech Qualifier last season.
“Anytime you can start with an event that's kind of the core of your team, it gets you off to a good start,” Holloway commented. “I'm very confident in those four guys, as is Coach (Steve) Lemke, and I know he has them ready. I'm looking forward to coming out and watching it.
“If today was any indication, what went on in the women's pent in watching the new collegiate record, this meet is going to be exciting and we just want to join the party,” Holloway finished.
