44 Gators Named to SEC Spring Academic Honor Roll
Tuesday, July 2, 2013 | Track and Field
44 Florida track & field athletes were named to the 2013 Southeastern Conference Spring Academic Honor Roll, announced Tuesday by league commissioner Mike Slive.
The 2013 SEC Spring Academic Honor Roll is based on grades from the 2012 summer, fall and 2013 spring terms. The Florida men's track & field team, which won its second consecutive NCAA Outdoor title last month, saw 21 earn Academic All-SEC honors. That total stood second among the league's men's track & field programs.
For the 2012-13 season, a total of 186 Gators earned spots on the SEC Academic Honor Roll (46 on fall list; 44 winter), making UF the only SEC school to place 100 or more student-athletes on the Academic Honor Roll each of the last 16 years.
Among those honored include NCAA Champion in the indoor men's long jump, Marquis Dendy (Middletown, Del.), who was also named the SEC Indoor Men's Field Athlete of the Year as well as the USTFCCCA South Region Men's Indoor Field Athlete of the Year. 2013 SEC Weight Throw Champion and First Team All-American David Triassi (Jacksonville, Fla.) was honored by the SEC Tuesday after recently being honored as a Capital One First Team Academic All-American®.
Sean Obinwa (Tampa, Fla.), the 2013 SEC Champion indoors in the men's 800, was honored on this year's honor roll, as well as sophomore Hugh Graham, Jr. (Miami, Fla.), who now has three NCAA relay titles, three NCAA team titles and six All-America honors to his credit in just two years in the Orange and Blue.
On the women's side, two members of Florida's SEC Champion women's distance medley relay, Cory McGee (Pass Christian, Miss.) and Agata Strausa (Riga, Latvia), were named to the honor roll. McGee was also the SEC Champion indoors in the women's mile and the NCAA runner-up outdoors in the women's 1,500 meters.
Sophomore Ciarra Brewer (Union City, Calif.) turned in stellar performances in the classroom as well as the runway, capturing the 2013 SEC title in the women's triple jump with a personal best, UF record, facility record and SEC Championship meet record leap of 13.85m/45-5.25.
To be recognized to the SEC Academic Honor Roll, each student-athlete must 1) have a GPA of 3.00 for either the preceding academic year or have a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or above at the nominating institution; 2) be on scholarship, a letterwinner or have participated on a varsity team for two years if non-scholarship; 3) have completed 24 semester hours of non-remedial credit at the nominating institution; and 4) have been a member of the varsity team for the sport's entire NCAA Championship segment.
