Gators Showcase Depth on Day One of Regionals

Six of seven Gators in main draw singles and three of four Florida doubles tandems advanced in their respective events in Atlanta, Georgia, at the USTA/ITA Southeast Regional Championships hosted by Georgia Tech at the Ken Byers Tennis Complex Friday.
Gator sophomore Stefani Stojic picked up an impressive victory over No. 79-ranked and No. 11 seed Yukako Noi of Florida State, 6-2, 6-3 to highlight Florida singles action. No. 14-ranked Brianna Morgan, the highest seeded Gator in singles at No. 3, defeated Ashley Dean of Stetson in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2. No. 7 seed Peggy Porter swept her first set versus Florida Gulf Coast's Sarah Means, 6-0, and took the second, 6-3.
Gator rookie Josie Kuhlman, the No. 5 seed, topped Carlotta Orlando of Florida International, 6-4, 6-1. Fellow Florida newcomer Spencer Liang defeated Maja Salibasic of Stetson, 6-3, 6-2. No. 89-ranked and No. 13-seeded Belinda Woolcock closed the day on a high note for the Gators with a 7-5, 6-1 victory over North Florida's Taylor Hollander.
Three Gator doubles duos moved past two rounds of play Friday morning. No. 4-seeded freshman tandem Kuhlman and Porter went two-for-two on the day, outlasting Miami's Wendy Zhang and Sinead Lohan, 8-7, and later defeating Jessica Cortes and Olga Martinez of South Florida, 8-2. The Florida rookies moved to 6-1 in doubles this fall.
No. 6 seed Brooke Austin and Kourtney Keegan as well as No. 8 seed Morgan and Woolcock made their 2014 fall season debut as respective doubles pairings. Austin and Keegan blanked Central Florida's Caroline Eberhart and Cortney Cesarini, 8-0, in the first round, and topped Alexa Anton-Ohlmeyer and Alexis Prokopuik of Georgia Tech, 8-3, in the Round of 16. Morgan and Woolcock rolled past Florida A&M's Symone Townsend and Elysia Ortiz, 8-0, to open the day. They went on to defeat Maria Cunningham and Taylor Holander of North Florida, 8-3.

Overall, I was happy with the day. We are trending up, although we still have areas we can improve on, especially offensively.
