NCAA Play at Dizney Stadium
NCAA soccer action makes its debut this season at the Donald R. Dizney Stadium. The Florida lacrosse team has played seven NCAA games at the Dizney Stadium since the program received its first NCAA berth in 2011. The Gators won 3-0 over Mercer Sunday in the first NCAA Soccer match played at Dizney Stadium.
The Gator soccer team played two 2014 regular-season matches at the Dizney Stadium to make the venue available if the Gators received a NCAA bid. Florida soccer made its first appearance at Dizney Stadium for a 3-0 win over South Florida on Aug. 22 and also turned in a 3-1 win over Missouri on Sept. 28.
Team Records:
Florida: 15-4-1, 9-2 SEC
California: 14-5-2, 5-4-2 Pac 12
About the Florida Gators:
Florida's Becky Burleigh has been the head coach for each of the program's 20 seasons and is one of two women to lead her team to the NCAA title.
Sophomore Savannah Jordan leads the Gators with 40 points off of 17 goals and six assists. Her goals total is tied for ninth in the latest NCAA Division I statistics. The Gators' assist leader (10) is senior outside back Tessa Andujar. Senior Havana Solaun is second among the Gators in goals (6), assists (9) and points (21). Senior Taylor Burke started every match in goal this season and owns a goals-against-average of 0.86. She registered the 27th shutout of her career in UF's 3-0 win over Mercer, which ties her for the school record.
Five Gators appear on 2014 All-Southeastern Conference teams, including four on the first team. Three Florida players are on the All-SEC first team for the second consecutive year – Jordan, Solaun and defender Christen Westphal. Also earning All-SEC first team honors is Andujar. Florida's other center back, junior Claire Falknor, appears on the All-SEC second team.
In the Gators' Last Outing:
Last Sunday, Florida opened NCAA action with a 3-0 win over Mercer in NCAA First Round play at Dizney Stadium. Annie Speese's 12-yard left-footed volley off the cross from fellow senior Tessa Andujar put the Gators on the board in the 19th minute. After 62 minutes of scoreless play, Savannah Jordan scored twice in the final eight minutes. Her first came off a through ball from fellow sophomore Pamela Begič in the 82nd minute. With less than a minute remaining, sophomore Liz Slattery's mid-circle pass found senior Havana Solaun at the top of the Bears' defensive third. Solaun's pass from the top of the box found Jordan who scored from 10 yards with 26 seconds remaining. It was Jordan's fourth multi-goal match of the season and the 11th of her career. The shutout was the 27th of Taylor Burke's career, moving her into a tie with Katie Fraine for the Gators' career solo shutouts record.
NCAA Action:
UF is one of eight programs playing host to 2014 NCAA Second and Third Round action this weekend. Tournament play continues when NCAA Quarterfinal action will be held Nov. 28, 29 or 30 on four campus sites with the Women's College Cup set for Dec. 5-7 at the FAU Stadium in Boca Raton, Florida.
NCAA Second Round action is set for Friday at the eight sites across the nation.
Gator NCAA Notes:
● Florida is one of nine programs to hoist the NCAA Championship trophy in the 32-year history of the event. The Gators, in the program's fourth year, took the 1998 NCAA title in Greensboro, North Carolina, with a 1-0 win over North Carolina.
● The Gators have compiled a 26-15-3 record in their 18 NCAA appearances.
● Florida's 18 overall NCAA appearances is tied for 15th among Division I programs. Of the teams among the top 15, Florida is the youngest as the UF program is in its 20th season.
● This is Florida's 12th straight NCAA appearance – which ranks 10th for active streaks of consecutive NCAA Championship berths. North Carolina leads all as the Tar Heels have appeared in all 33 NCAA Championship fields.
● Fifteen of the 16 teams seeded for the 2014 NCAA Soccer Championships advanced to the NCAA Second Round. Florida advances after its opening NCAA match for the 14th time in the program's 18 appearances.
● The Gators have been a NCAA No. 2 or 3 regional seed each of the last nine seasons. Florida received one of the 33 at-large NCAA berths. In last year's NCAA action, Florida reached the second round, falling 1-0 at Duke.
● This is the second time Florida and California have met, with both meetings coming in Gainesville for NCAA action. The two teams from opposite coasts met in 2008 NCAA Opening Round action, with UF taking a 2-1 win.
About the California Bears:
The Bears advanced to Gainesville with a 3-2 double overtime win over San Diego State Saturday in NCAA Opening Round play in Berkeley, California. Sophomore Arielle Ship put in the game winner in the 105th minute to send the Bears to their first NCAA Second Round action since 2012.
The Bears are led by senior Taylor Comeau's 23 points off of eight goals and seven assists. She is a 2014 All-Pac-12 Second Team selection. Freshman goalkeeper Emily Boyd has started all but one match this season and owns a goals-against-average of 1.05. She was joined the All-Pac 12 Freshman Team by defender Annia Mejia.
The Bears are making their 11th consecutive NCAA appearance and 22nd overall. California tied for fifth in 2014 Pac 12 play with its 5-4-2 record.
