Freshmen Bring Their "A” Game to Indoors

Freshman Brooke Austin reached the singles semifinals and Josie Kuhlman is in the hunt for a consolation title after day two of the 2014 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships hosted by Columbia University at the USTA Billie Jean King Tennis Center, home of the US Open, in Flushing, New York Friday.
No. 4-seeded Austin topped Saska Gavrilovska of Texas A&M, 6-2, 6-3, in the Round of 16, and moved past No. 8-seeded No. 26 Viktoriya Lushkova of Oklahoma State, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 to reach her second national semifinal of the fall. She will meet No. 5-ranked, No. 6-seeded Julia Elbaba of Virginia.
Despite dropping her first round match of main draw singles, Kuhlman remains alive in the consolation singles event. The No. 2-seeded Gator rookie defeated No. 85 Kanika Vaidya of Columbia, 6-4, 7-5 in the Round of 16. Kuhlman will take on Baylor's No. 78 Blair Shankle in the quarterfinals.
“Our freshmen stepped up today in singles,” said head coach Roland Thornqvist. “We looked sharper and made better decisions at the end of sets today. We had opportunities in doubles as well. After a slow first set, I thought we hit and moved really well. It was great tennis all the way to the end.”
Austin and Kourtney Keegan forced three sets in doubles, but dropped their quarterfinal match to Kelsey Laurente and Viktoriya Lushkova of Oklahoma State, 6-4, 7-6(4), 10-7.
