
Florida's Alaina Johnson finalist for AAI Award

University of Florida senior gymnast Alaina Johnson (Tyler, Texas) is one of the six finalists for the 2014 AAI Award. The honor is given annually to the top senior student-athlete in NCAA Division I women's gymnastics. The winner will be announced at the NCAA Women's Gymnastics Championships awards banquet next month in Birmingham, Ala.

Johnson has been among the nation's top gymnasts throughout her career. Her winning all-around total of 39.825 turned in last Friday is the nation's 2014 leader and set the Florida record. It is the nation's top all-around total since Georgia's Courtney Kupets posted a 39.85 in 2009. Last season, Johnson took the 2013 NCAA uneven bars title and helped Florida win its first NCAA team title. A 10-time All-American, Johnson joined teammate Kytra Hunter as the only two in 2012 NCAA Championships' competition to earn the maximum of five All-America honors. She was named the 2011 Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Year and won the league's bars title as a sophomore.
Johnson has been named to the last three SEC Academic Honor Roll and National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches Scholastic All-America teams and holds a 3.78 GPA in sociology. She has also been an active member of the Gainesville community, volunteering in more than 50 different activities.
The No.3 Florida Gators gymnastics team will close out their regular season at Missouri on this Friday, March 14, at the Hearnes Center in Columbia, Mo.
