Fawn Miller Captures SEC Javelin Title Saturday, Gators Set Sights on Championship Finals Sunday
Sunday, May 18, 2014 | Track and Field
LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Florida junior thrower Fawn Miller used a PR, the second-best performance in school history and a new SEC Meet Record of 57.10m/187-4 to capture the SEC javelin title Saturday on the third day of the 2014 SEC Outdoor Championships at the Kentucky Track and Field Complex.
Sophomore Marija Vucenovic joined Miller, now a two-time javelin champ and the NCAA leader, on the podium with a runner-up finish in the event (54.51m/178-10), sophomore Robin Reynolds was the SEC runner-up in the long jump (6.36m/20-10.5) and junior Taylor Burke tied for third in the high jump (1.77m/5-9.75) as the Gator women's squad moved into fourth place (39.5 points) with nine events scored entering the final day of SEC outdoor competition. The UF men are tied for sixth in the team race (11 points) heading into Sunday competition after six events.
A total of 23 Gator finals events will be contested tomorrow between UF's men and women. Florida qualified 19 athletes, 10 men and nine women, for finals following all preliminary races, while eight athletes will run the 5K final and another eight will compete in field events on the final day of the SEC Outdoor Championships. All relays will additionally be contested Sunday as the 2014 league champions will be crowned. Florida owns nine SEC outdoor championships, four on the men's side ('53, '56, '87, '10) and five in women's action ('92, '97, '98, '03,'09).
HOLLOWAY'S TAKE
“I'm very proud of Fawn (Miller) for being SEC Champion in the javelin and very proud of both Marija (Vucenovic) and Robin (Reynolds) for being SEC runners up, Marija in the javelin, Robin in the long jump; for Robin, this was her first SEC Championships in the long jump. Taylor (Burke) is always one of our top competitors in terms of consistency, always in the top three to four at this meet; I know she wanted to jump better than she did in the high jump, but we'll do that next time out. I thought we did a great job of qualifying today. I questioned our focus and passion the first two days, but I think we overcame that and set ourselves up for a great competition tomorrow. Right now, we'll get back to the hotel, get rested and come out here tomorrow and do what we do best – compete our hearts out.”
FAWN MILLER – 2014 SEC JAVELIN CHAMPION
On her win and how it felt to have teammate Marija Vucenovic in second:
“Warming up I felt great. Going into the finals, I knew I had a lot more left in me and I was ready to let one go. It was awesome (to have teammate Marija Vucenovic second), especially when we cheer each other on. We're so competitive and that competitiveness just pushes both of us to throw even further. ”
On her PR and what she'll do to prepare for NCAAs:
“It was a huge mark, I couldn't be more excited. I'm going to continue to do the same thing; I know I have some more in me. I'm going to get my approach down, because I struggled a little bit today, so I'm excited.”
